Private car fell off the ferry and drowned in the river, rescued after 2 hours

A private car fell into Shitalakshya river from a stopped ferry in Narayanganj and drowned. This incident took place at Nabiganj Ghat of Bandar Upazila on Thursday. After about two hours of efforts by the fire service diving team, the car was pulled from the river at around 7 pm. No one was injured or missing in this incident.

According to witnesses and police, a white colored private car (Dhaka Metro-G-17-3224) boarded the ferry from Nabiganj Ghat of Bandar Upazila at 5:15 pm on Thursday. At this time, another car was being loaded on the ferry. Suddenly the private car lost control and tore through the rope barrier in front of the ferry and fell into the river. The car floats for a few minutes. At that time, the driver Zakir Hossain who was inside managed to get out by opening the window. While the car floated in the river for 5-7 minutes, some boatmen tried unsuccessfully to push the car to the river bank. At one point the private car plunged into the river.

Meanwhile, this video of the private car falling into the river has spread on social media. Hundreds of people gathered on the banks of the river. On receiving the information, the diving team of three units of Hajiganj Fire Service and Port Service and Naval Fire Service reached and started the rescue operation. The diving team tried for two hours to bring the sunken private car to the shore around 7pm by tying it with a rope and with the help of a motorized boat and local people.

The owner of the private car is businessman Mahmud Rudra, a resident of Banani area of ​​the capital. He is a contractor. He told Prothom Alo that he and one of his friends had come to a dockyard at the port of Narayanganj on business. He and his friend got out of the car when his car boarded the ferry on the way home. At that time the driver was parking the car and the accident probably happened by mistake. He said that there is no negligence in this, it is the result of carelessness of the driver.

Hajiganj Fire Service Senior Station Officer Nurul Alam told Prothom Alo that the car fell from the ferry into the river due to the carelessness of the driver. But the driver managed to get out safely. He said, as shown by the local people, the diving team tied the rope to the car and pulled the car up with the help of an engine-powered boat and local people.

In this regard, Bandar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Golam Ashraf Uddin Moktar told Prothom Alo that the private car lost control and fell into the river from the ferry. The driver inside the private car opened the window and came out. There were no casualties.
