Prime Minister Tarique Rahman Urges Upazila Executive Officers to Prioritize Public Service and Environmental Stewardship

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has urged Upazila Nirbahi Officers (UNOs) to perform their duties with the utmost responsibility and humanity, emphasizing their role in driving national development and public welfare. Addressing a meeting at the Prime Minister’s Office in Tejgaon, Dhaka, on Saturday, Rahman characterized the opportunity to serve the public as a significant trust and a divine blessing that must be utilized to support the vulnerable.

The Prime Minister underscored the necessity of working toward a secure and habitable Bangladesh for future generations. Describing field administration officials as the vital bridge between the government and the citizenry, Rahman reminded the officers that even if they are posted outside their home districts, every part of the country is their own, and all citizens deserve to be treated with the same care as one’s own kin.

During the session, Rahman noted that legal frameworks alone cannot resolve all societal challenges. He tasked the UNOs with playing a more proactive role in raising public awareness, asserting that education and persuasion are essential tools for effective governance. The Prime Minister also highlighted environmental sustainability, specifically tasking officers with promoting tree planting campaigns at the local government level. He suggested that official encouragement could significantly increase community participation in green initiatives.

Regarding national infrastructure, the Prime Minister announced plans to excavate 20,000 kilometers of canals across the country in phases. This initiative is designed to bolster water conservation, increase agricultural output, mitigate waterlogging, and restore long-term ecological balance. Rahman further encouraged the officials to foster a culture of sports within their respective regions, noting that athletic engagement helps instill discipline and positive values among the youth.

The meeting was attended by senior government officials, including the Prime Minister’s Advisor on Public Administration Ismail Zabiullah, State Minister for Public Administration Abdul Bari, Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Gani, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister ABM Abdus Sattar, and Press Secretary Saleh Shibli. During the event, the Prime Minister recognized 83 UNOs who demonstrated fiscal integrity by returning surplus funds from canal excavation projects to the state treasury.
