Prime Minister Tareque Rahman arrives in Kishoreganj to inaugurate National Fisheries Week 2026 and launch regional development projects

KISHOREGANJ — Prime Minister Tareque Rahman arrived in Pakundia, Kishoreganj, on Sunday morning for a day-long official visit focused on inaugurating national fisheries programs and overseeing local development projects. The Prime Minister reached the Mirzapur Chairman Bari Ghat area at approximately 11:30 a.m., where he was greeted by local Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leaders and residents.

The visit marks the first time a national-level fisheries week inauguration has been held outside of Dhaka. This year’s event, “National Fisheries Week 2026,” is strategically hosted in the greater Mymensingh region to highlight the potential and success of the area’s freshwater fish industry. Upon his arrival, the Prime Minister is scheduled to release fish fry into the Old Brahmaputra River and distribute fry to local fishermen.

Following his engagements in Pakundia, the Prime Minister will visit a carp hatchery complex in the Achmita area of Katiadi at 12:30 p.m. At 1:00 p.m., he is slated to officially inaugurate the national fisheries program at the Achmita George Institution grounds, an event that will also feature awards for entrepreneurs who have made significant contributions to the fisheries sector.

The Prime Minister’s itinerary includes a visit to the historic Sholakia Eidgah grounds at 2:30 p.m. to inaugurate development projects and participate in a tree-planting program alongside members of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal. After a luncheon and rest at the Circuit House, he will attend a ceremony at the district’s Old Stadium at 4:00 p.m. During this event, he will distribute family cards, provide financial grants, and issue honorariums to mosque imams, muezzins, and caretakers of religious institutions. Additionally, he is expected to launch a pilot project for providing school uniforms and bags to students nationwide.

The visit has generated significant local anticipation, with residents looking to the Prime Minister to address long-standing demands regarding infrastructure development, job creation, the implementation of a Kishoreganj Export Processing Zone (EPZ), and the construction of modern cold storage facilities for the region’s haor fish catch.

The Prime Minister is accompanied by Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries and Livestock Mohammad Amin Ur Rashid, State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Sultan Salauddin Tuku, State Minister for Textiles and Jute and Kishoreganj District BNP President Md. Shariful Alam, and local members of parliament Md. Mazharul Islam and Md. Jalal Uddin. The Prime Minister is scheduled to depart for Dhaka at 6:00 p.m.
