Prime Minister pays respects at grave of late President Ziaur Rahman

Prime Minister and Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairman Tarique Rahman led a national commemoration on Saturday, marking the 45th death anniversary of the party’s founder and former President Ziaur Rahman.
At approximately 11:00 a.m., Rahman visited the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar mausoleum to place wreaths at the grave of the late president. He was joined by senior party leadership, including members of the Standing Committee Goyeshwar Chandra Roy and Abdul Moyeen Khan, along with Home Minister Salauddin Ahmed and Minister for Women, Children, and Social Welfare Professor A.Z.M. Zahid Hossain.
Following the ceremonial floral tribute, the Prime Minister and party officials observed a moment of silence to honor the legacy of the founder. The event concluded with a special prayer session organized by the Jatiyatabadi Olama Dal.
Ziaur Rahman was assassinated on May 30, 1981, at the Chittagong Circuit House during a military uprising. The BNP observes the date annually as a day of martyrdom, reflecting on his role in the nation’s history.
To mark the anniversary, the party implemented a somber protocol across the country. Flags were flown at half-mast at the BNP’s central office in Naya Paltan, the chairman’s office in Gulshan, and at all regional party headquarters, accompanied by the hoisting of national and black flags.
The tribute ceremony saw a broad turnout from the party’s rank and file, including representatives from the Dhaka Metropolitan North and South units, Juba Dal, Swechasebak Dal, and various professional organizations such as Doctors Association of Bangladesh (DAB).
This event is part of an eight-day program launched on May 25 to commemorate the occasion. Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi confirmed that the observation will continue through Sunday with a discussion meeting at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh.
Following the morning ceremony, Prime Minister Rahman inaugurated a humanitarian initiative near the T&T building on Manik Mia Avenue. The Prime Minister is scheduled to participate in relief efforts across 17 locations throughout the North and South City Corporations, distributing clothing and food supplies to the underprivileged as part of the memorial activities.
