Police in Bhurungamari, Kurigram, seized a 10-foot-tall cannabis plant during a raid on a chili field in the remote Tilai Union on Saturday. The operation, led by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Muntasir Mamun, took place in the Dakshin Tilai Char area following intelligence reports regarding illicit cultivation in the isolated riverine region.

Local residents indicated that the plant had been growing on the site for approximately two years. The farmer identified as the owner of the field, Yusuf Mia, had reportedly been nurturing the plant amidst his crops. Upon learning of the police operation, Mia fled the scene and remains at large.

ASP Mamun stated that investigators are currently looking into the possibility that local farmers are being coerced or incentivized by narcotics traffickers to engage in illegal cultivation for profit. Authorities are continuing their search of the surrounding char lands to determine if additional illicit plants are being grown in the area.

Police are in the process of filing a formal case against the suspect under the Narcotics Control Act.
