Police recover body of missing school night guard in Chittagong paddy field

Police in Chittagong’s Rauzan upazila recovered the bloodied body of a 52-year-old school night guard from a paddy field on Wednesday, one day after he went missing. The victim, Swapan Barua, was discovered around noon in the West Barua Para area of Kadalpur Union, approximately 300 meters from his residence.

According to family members, Barua, who worked at Gourachandra Jatindra High School, disappeared on Tuesday evening after receiving a phone call. He informed his family that an unidentified individual had requested his presence at a nearby shop, after which he left his home and never returned. Despite an overnight search by relatives and neighbors, his body was found in the field the following morning.

Local residents and relatives noted that the body sustained visible injuries to the forehead, nose, hands, and back. Shason Rakshit, a member of the school’s managing committee, stated that the victim had been summoned from his home shortly before his death. He called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances of the incident to ensure those responsible are held accountable.

Authorities have adopted a cautious approach to the investigation. Officers at the scene discovered a bottle of poison near the body, leading police to speculate that the injuries may have been self-inflicted as a result of convulsions following the ingestion of a toxic substance. Sub-Inspector Muhammad Khurshed, who prepared the initial inquest report, confirmed that while injuries were present, it remains unclear whether they were caused by physical assault or as a result of the victim struggling on the ground.

Rauzan Police Station Officer-in-Charge Saiful Islam stated that the body has been sent to the Chittagong Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy. Officials are currently investigating whether the death was a homicide or if other factors were involved, noting that the official cause of death will be determined pending the medical examiner’s report. Police are also actively investigating the claims that the victim was lured from his home under false pretenses.
