Police launch murder investigation after woman found dead in locked Dhaka apartment

Police discovered the semi-decomposed body of a 24-year-old woman inside a seventh-floor apartment near the Kazipara Metro Station in Dhaka’s Kafrul area on Tuesday. Authorities were alerted by neighbors after a foul odor emanated from the unit, prompting officers and fire service personnel to force entry into the residence, which had been locked from the outside.
The victim has been identified as Rabeya, also known as Jenny Khan. According to local police, the victim had been living in the apartment with her husband, Ashikuzzaman, since April. Family members reported that the couple had been experiencing ongoing domestic disputes, stemming from their marriage, which had taken place against their families’ wishes.
Kafrul Police Station Officer-in-Charge Sajjad Hossain stated that investigations suggest Ashikuzzaman was last seen leaving the apartment shortly after midnight on June 14 and has remained missing since. Due to the advanced state of decomposition of the body, officials could not immediately confirm visible signs of physical trauma.
The remains have been transported to a hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination to determine the precise cause of death. While the investigation remains in its early stages, police have classified the incident as a homicide based on the circumstances at the scene and the primary evidence collected. Law enforcement authorities are currently working to locate Ashikuzzaman for questioning.
