Bangladeshi football fan attempts to file legal complaint against FIFA over refereeing decisions

A 22-year-old football fan in Bangladesh has attempted to initiate legal action against FIFA President Gianni Infantino and a match referee, alleging widespread corruption and bias during a recent World Cup fixture. Md. Rakib, a resident of Noakhali district, filed a formal complaint at the Sudharam Model Police Station on Wednesday, seeking five crore taka—roughly $42,000—in damages for the “emotional distress” caused by the outcome of a match between Argentina and Egypt.
In his complaint, Rakib alleged that the match was marred by premeditated fraud, specifically citing the awarding of an unfair penalty, the cancellation of a legitimate goal, and biased disciplinary actions against the Egyptian team and coaching staff. He named the match referee, François Letexier, alongside FIFA leadership and several other individuals, accusing them of manipulating the game’s result to favor one side.

Local authorities, however, declined to register the complaint as a formal criminal case. Sudharam Model Police Station officer-in-charge Mohammad Kamrul Islam confirmed that while the youth had presented a written grievance, the matter falls outside the jurisdiction of a local police station. Officials reportedly advised the complainant that the issue is not a matter of local law enforcement and suggested he explore avenues through international legal channels instead.
Despite the police rejection, Rakib remains resolute in his pursuit of justice. Speaking to reporters on Thursday, he maintained that he and other witnesses were deeply affected by the perceived injustice and stated his intention to escalate the matter to the courts. He indicated that he is prepared to organize public protests if his grievances regarding the match officials are not formally addressed.
