Police File Terror Case Against 31 Over Banned Student League Protest in Coxs Bazar

Police in Ramu, Cox’s Bazar, have filed a criminal case against 71 individuals following an unauthorized motorcycle procession and flash demonstration held under the banner of the banned student organization, Chhatra League. The legal action, brought under the Anti-Terrorism Act, targets 31 identified suspects and 30 to 40 unidentified participants involved in the incident.

According to a police report filed by Sub-Inspector Muhammad Nurul Absar, the demonstration occurred on the morning of July 26 near the Jamjam Filling Station on the local highway. Authorities allege that the procession was orchestrated under the instruction of District Chhatra League President SM Saddam and led by local party figures Tareq Uddin Mishuk and Ershadul Kausar Sakib. Participants reportedly brandished banners featuring former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, alongside clubs and stones, while shouting slogans intended to intimidate the public.

Law enforcement officers arrived at the scene around noon after receiving reports of the gathering. Upon noticing the police, the demonstrators abandoned their protest materials—which included 13 wooden clubs, 19 bricks, and banners with the slogan “Sheikh Hasina will come, Bangladesh will smile”—and fled the area on motorcycles. Police confirmed that a formal seizure list was prepared in the presence of three local witnesses.

Investigating officers identified the 31 suspects through a combination of video analysis, confidential intelligence, and witness statements. Preliminary findings indicate that the participants included various members of the Chhatra League, Jubo League, Sramik League, and the Awami League.

Ramu Police Station Officer-in-Charge Monirul Islam Bhuiyan confirmed that the suspects remain at large and that ongoing operations are underway to apprehend them. Meanwhile, the local chapter of the Chhatra Dal has staged a protest rally and demonstration in response to the incident.
