Photographic exhibition of 6 security personnel of the third gender of Gana University

For the fourth time, a photo exhibition of six transgender security personnel of Savar Public University of Dhaka has been organized. In this two-day exhibition, which began yesterday, Sunday, the stories of six people’s life struggles, past and present social status are presented along with their pictures.

The organizers said that in 2018, for the first time, six transgenders were appointed as security personnel in the university. To highlight their life struggles, past and present social status, a photo exhibition was organized for the first time in the month of July 2022 at Gana University’s Badamtala under the title of ‘Thirdiya Khe Andan Jeevan’. The exhibition was inaugurated by Zafrullah Chowdhury, the founder of Gonoshasthaya Kendra and Gana University. In November of the same year, the exhibition was organized for the second time at the Gonoshasthaya Samaj-based Medical College Hospital premises and for the third time at the Savar National Memorial in March of the following year. Yesterday, a photography exhibition was organized for the fourth time at Badamtala of the university with the same subject and title.

Naeem Uddin, the thinker of the exhibition, said, “When I entered the university, seeing these security personnel of the third gender seemed exceptional and inspiring to me. Usually we are used to seeing them in buses, trains or launches. But here they are working in a responsible profession—it makes me wonder. Since then, the desire to spread this humane and inclusive way of thinking has been created.

Naeem Uddin also said, “Since I do photography, I have taken the initiative to present their stories through pictures.” Gana University Photographic Society and Gana University authorities cooperated in this arrangement. It is important to create sustainable employment opportunities for Hijras. If they are appointed as security personnel in the public and private universities of the country, then on one hand their livelihood will be ensured, on the other hand, a positive attitude towards them will be developed in the society.
