Pallabi child murder suspect seeks pardon, names alleged accomplice in final court statement

The Dhaka Metropolitan Child Repression Prevention Tribunal has concluded the self-defense hearing in the case concerning the brutal rape and murder of an eight-year-old child in the city’s Pallabi area. Following the conclusion of testimony from 16 prosecution witnesses, Judge Masrur Saleheen scheduled closing arguments for Thursday.
During the hearing on Wednesday, the primary defendant, Sohel Rana, admitted to his involvement in the crime while simultaneously pleading for leniency. Addressing the court, Rana claimed that an individual identified as “Dollar” was also involved in the incident and urged authorities to apprehend him. He further maintained that his wife, Swapna Akter, who is a co-defendant in the case, played no part in the offense.
Swapna Akter, for her part, maintained her innocence throughout the proceedings. When asked by the court to respond to the charges and witness testimonies presented against her, she denied any involvement in the crime.
The case dates back to May 19, when the dismembered body of the child was discovered in a third-floor apartment in Pallabi. Investigators reported that Rana fled the scene by breaking through a bathroom grill immediately following the incident. His wife was taken into custody at the apartment that same day, while Rana was arrested by police in Fatullah, Narayanganj, later that evening.
Following his arrest, Rana reportedly provided a confessional statement to the court, admitting to the rape and murder of the child. The father of the victim subsequently filed a formal case at the Pallabi police station, leading to a trial that saw testimony from 16 witnesses before moving to its current phase of closing arguments.
