Nurul Kabir urges political parties to avoid duplicity for the sake of responsible journalism

Nurul Kabir, president of the editorial council and New Age editor, called for strengthening mutual cooperation and dialogue between the government and journalists to make the role of the media more effective in building a democratic society. At the same time, he urged the political parties to avoid duplicity for the sake of responsible journalism.
On the occasion of World Free Media Day 2026, Nurul Kabir said this in the discussion meeting organized by Editor Parishad and Newspaper Owners Association of Bangladesh (NOAB). This discussion meeting was held at Sirdap Auditorium in the capital on Sunday afternoon. Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan was the chief guest. World Press Freedom Day is celebrated on May 3 every year. This year the theme of the day is ‘Independent and responsible media as the main companion in establishing a culture of accountability’.

Nurul Kabir said that although various initiatives have been taken to ensure the freedom and responsibility of the media worldwide, it is being hindered in many cases. He said that media plays an important role in democratic development – the issue needs to be established more clearly in the society.
Drawing the attention of the Information Minister present at the meeting, Nurul Kabir said that it has been seen in the past that the ruling political parties talk about ‘responsible journalism’ but take a different stand when they go to the opposition party. He also urged the political parties to come out of this trend.

This leader of the editorial board said that the current government of Bangladesh has been established in the context of a long movement and mass uprising, new expectations have been created among the people. In this context it is important to ensure free flow of information and take effective steps to protect media freedom.
Calling on the government, Nurul Kabir said that instead of assurances of new commissions or legislation, effective initiatives should be taken by reviewing the recommendations of various past commissions. At the same time, he also emphasized on having research-based preparation on the related issues of the government before sitting in dialogue with the journalists.
Nawab president and Manabzamin editor-in-chief Matiur Rahman Chowdhury, Daily Star editor Mahfuz Anam, former Media Reforms Commission chief Kamal Ahmed, Prothom Alo executive editor Sajjad Sharif, Financial Express editor Shamsul Haque Zahid, Kaler Kantha editor and Jatiya Press Club president Hasan Hafiz, Inqilab editor AMM Bahauddin, Dhaka Tribune editor Riaz Ahmed, Samakal editor also spoke at the discussion meeting. Shahed Muhammad Ali, Acting Editor Syed Shahnewaz Karim and Sangbad Executive Editor Shahriar Karim. General Secretary of the Editor Council and Merchant News Editor Dewan Hanif Mahmud moderated the discussion.
