Notorious underworld figure dies after targeted shooting in Dhaka

Yasin Khan Palash, a notorious figure formerly listed among the country’s top wanted criminals, died Friday night at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka. He was 50 years old and had been receiving treatment for gunshot wounds sustained in an assassination attempt one week earlier.
Known in criminal circles as “Kailya Palash,” the man had been released from prison just one month ago after serving a life sentence for the 2002 murder of Juba Dal leader Mizanur Rahman Mizan. Although a trial court had initially handed down a death sentence for the 2002 killing in Rampura, the High Court later commuted the verdict to life imprisonment.
The fatal attack occurred on June 12 near the Bangladesh Television headquarters in Rampura. Witnesses reported that unidentified assailants on a motorcycle intercepted Palash near his residence and fired two shots into his head before fleeing the scene. Following the shooting, he was initially rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital and later transferred to Evercare Hospital due to the severity of his condition.
In response to the shooting, Palash’s wife, Mahmuda Khanom, filed an attempted murder case with the Hatirjheel police station. The primary suspect named in the lawsuit is Zishan Ahmed Monty, who is also classified as a top-tier criminal. The complaint further implicates ten other individuals, including Badsha, also known as Guja Badsha, Golada Badsha, Shanto, Soila-man Khondokar, Faruk, Hebel, Molla Jony, Firoz Mohammad Molla, Picchi Alamin, and Sajib.
Law enforcement agencies have arrested two suspects in connection with the case: Imam Hossain, apprehended in Badda, and Maruf Sultan, detained in the Hatirjheel area. According to Hatirjheel Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Asaduzzaman, although the two men were not explicitly named in the original FIR, investigators have confirmed their direct involvement. Police maintain that Imam Hossain served as the motorcycle driver during the attack, while Maruf Sultan acted as a lookout in the vicinity.
