The Indian government has officially elevated the status of its new High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Dinesh Trivedi, granting him the rank of a Union Cabinet Minister. According to a formal order issued Wednesday by India’s Ministry of Home Affairs, the designation serves primarily to manage protocol requirements during high-level state functions and official engagements.
Trivedi, a veteran politician and former Union Minister of Railways, arrived in Dhaka on June 5 to assume his new diplomatic duties. On Thursday, he formally presented his credentials to Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin. His appointment follows the political upheaval in Bangladesh on August 5, 2024, which led to the resignation of the Awami League government and prompted a period of diplomatic strain between the two neighboring nations.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi selected Trivedi for the mission specifically to leverage his extensive political experience in navigating the complex geopolitical challenges that have emerged since the transition of power in Dhaka. As a former Member of Parliament for Barrackpore in West Bengal, Trivedi brings a deep familiarity with the cultural and historical ties shared by the two regions.
Born in Gujarat, Trivedi possesses a diverse background that blends international education with local insights. After completing his schooling in Himachal Pradesh, he pursued a Bachelor of Commerce degree at St. Xavier’s College in Kolkata before earning an MBA from the University of Texas. Beyond his political career, he is widely recognized for his proficiency as a sitar player.
