Noakhali Science and Technology University dissolves student wing committee following violent clashes over dormitory seat allocation

The central committee of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) has dissolved the Noakhali Science and Technology University (NSTU) unit committee following violent clashes between two factions of the organization. The unrest, which erupted over the control of a dormitory seat, left at least 10 students injured and prompted the university administration to launch an official inquiry.

The conflict began late Monday night at the Abdul Malek Ukil Hall and escalated into further confrontations across the campus on Tuesday. Witnesses and university officials reported that the dispute originated from a rivalry between the unit’s former president, Zahid Hasan, and general secretary, Hasibul Hossain, against the unit’s former vice president, Sabbir Hossain. The tension peaked over the control of room 413 in the Abdul Malek Ukil Hall.

Three of the injured students—Shamim Hossain, 24, of the Fisheries and Marine Science department, Kayes Hossain, 22, of Business Administration, and Anishur Sifat, 22, of Statistics—were initially treated at the university medical center before being transferred to the 250-bed Noakhali General Hospital for advanced care. Several others received first aid at local medical facilities.

According to student reports, the Tuesday afternoon violence involved a group of 15 to 20 outsiders who entered the campus armed with sticks. These individuals reportedly chased and assaulted students near the Bhasha Shahid Salam Hall, the Abdul Malek Ukil Hall, the campus roundabout, and the auditorium. The situation was eventually brought under control by Vice-Chancellor Professor Golam Rabbani and Proctor F.M. Arifur Rahman. Two outsiders were detained during the intervention, though their affiliations remain unconfirmed.

Journalists Mahi Siddiqui Siam, representing Manabzamin, and Mehedi Hasan, representing Pratidin Sangbad, alleged that they were physically assaulted by JCD activists while recording the clashes. The reporters further claimed that their mobile phones were seized and video footage documenting the violence was deleted.

The former general secretary of the NSTU unit, Hasibul Hossain, accused former vice-president Sabbir Hossain and Anishur Sifat of orchestrating an attack on general students using outsiders. Conversely, Sabbir Hossain alleged that the faction loyal to the former president and general secretary initiated the violence after attempting to forcibly place a student in a dormitory room.

In response to the property damage reported in two rooms of the Abdul Malek Ukil Hall, university authorities have formed a three-member investigation committee. Proctor F.M. Arifur Rahman confirmed the formation of the probe, stating that the administration will take necessary action based on the committee’s findings.

Hours after the violence, the central JCD leadership announced the dissolution of the university unit. A press release signed by central office secretary Md. Jahangir Alam stated that the decision was approved by central president Rakibul Islam and general secretary Nasir Uddin.
