New Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi arrives in Dhaka via land border

Dinesh Trivedi, the newly appointed Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh, arrived in the country on Friday morning via the Benapole-Petrapole land border crossing. Accompanied by his wife, Mrinal Trivedi, the former Indian railway minister and senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader traveled to Jessore before proceeding toward Dhaka by road.
Trivedi’s appointment, announced by the Indian government last April, marks a historic departure from traditional diplomatic protocol. In the 55-year history of bilateral relations between the two nations, this is the first instance of New Delhi appointing a career politician to the post of High Commissioner in Dhaka.
He succeeds Pranay Verma, a career diplomat who has transitioned to a new role as India’s ambassador to Brussels.
While air travel remains the standard mode of transport for high-level diplomatic arrivals, the use of a land route echoes a previous instance from 2020. During the height of the global COVID-19 pandemic, former High Commissioner Vikram Doraiswami arrived in Bangladesh through the Akhaura-Agartala border crossing due to the suspension of commercial flights.
Officials from both the Indian High Commission and the Bangladesh Ministry of Foreign Affairs have confirmed the arrival, marking the formal commencement of Trivedi’s tenure in the capital.
