NCP leader warns of government collapse over failure to implement reform mandates

National Citizen Party (NCP) chief coordinator Nasiruddin Patwari has issued a stern warning to the incumbent government, demanding the immediate implementation of reform mandates he claims were backed by 75 percent of the public in a recent referendum. Speaking to reporters on Friday during a visit to the historic Sixty Dome Mosque in Bagerhat, Patwari cautioned that the government faces potential collapse if it ignores the electorate’s call for structural change.

Patwari accused the current administration of failing to dismantle the remnants of the previous regime, alleging that known associates and agitators linked to the Awami League are securing bail under the protection of political allies. He demanded accountability for those involved in past violence, insisting that the government must not show leniency toward individuals responsible for the deaths of protesters during the recent mass uprising.

The NCP leader also leveled sharp criticism at the government’s administrative and educational appointments, alleging that unqualified individuals remain embedded within universities, the banking sector, and public service. He warned that replicating partisan development models—a practice he previously associated with the Awami League’s stronghold in Gopalganj—in other regions like Bogra’s Shibganj would perpetuate the systemic inequality that spurred the nationwide protests.

Addressing the political culture within the country, Patwari condemned the renaming of administrative units after political relatives, labeling such actions as manifestations of narrow-minded politics. Instead, he argued that infrastructure and public landmarks should be named in honor of the martyrs of the student-led revolution, such as Abu Sayed and Mugdho. He further accused current political actors of fostering nepotism and cronyism, warning that the public would not tolerate a return to the corrupt patronage systems that characterized the previous era.

Reflecting on the legacy of Bagerhat, Patwari praised the local population for removing the influence of the former ruling family, which he alleged exploited the region’s name for personal gain while neglecting genuine development. He pledged that, should the NCP come to power, it would establish a university in the district dedicated to the legacy of Hazrat Khan Jahan Ali (RA). Patwari’s visit to Bagerhat preceded an 11-party regional rally scheduled for Saturday in Khulna, where the coalition plans to maintain pressure on the government to accelerate its reform agenda.
