NCP leader Mahmuda Mitu calls for vigilance against Awami League resurgence as party marks July uprising anniversary

Mahmuda Mitu, a member of the National Citizens’ Committee (NCP), issued a stern call to action on Saturday during a discussion marking the second anniversary of the July mass uprising, held at the Alauddin Sangeetangon auditorium in Brahmanbaria. Addressing a gathering of party members, Mitu urged them to actively resist any attempts by Chhatra League and Awami League affiliates to mobilize in public spaces.
The discussion, which centered on the legacy of the uprising, saw Mitu push back against political criticism from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). Responding to claims that the NCP is politicizing the events of July, she asserted that her organization will remain steadfast in advocating for the memory of the martyrs. She maintained that the movement’s mission is defined by the fulfillment of the martyrs’ aspirations, which includes building a functional state, providing employment for thousands of unemployed youth, and ensuring the protection of women’s dignity.
Mitu drew parallels to the political legacy of BNP leader Khaleda Zia, describing her as an uncompromising figure whose commitment to the nation remained steadfast despite significant opposition. She emphasized that the NCP’s objectives transcend traditional partisan politics, focusing instead on systemic reform.
A core component of the NCP’s agenda, according to Mitu, is the fundamental reform of the national police force. She argued that the police must be liberated from partisan influence, asserting that law enforcement agencies should function as neutral entities serving the public rather than acting as political tools for any party. Mitu concluded by reaffirming the committee’s commitment to championing the voice of the people and implementing the structural changes promised in the wake of the uprising.
