Five-year-old boy drowns in Sunamganj haor while fishing

A five-year-old boy drowned in the Dharam Haor of Dharmapasha, Sunamganj, on Saturday afternoon after being swept away by strong currents while fishing with his older brothers. The victim, Sharif Hossain, a student in the primary school at Chanpur village, was reportedly trailing his siblings when the accident occurred.
According to family members and local residents, Sharif had accompanied his brothers, aged seven and eight, to a waterbody behind their village to catch fish. While the older siblings were actively casting nets, Sharif followed them carrying a container for the catch. Investigators noted that while his brothers were capable swimmers, Sharif lacked swimming skills. As the current intensified, the child was pulled under the water. One of his brothers managed to grab hold of an electric pole to reach safety, while the other rushed home to alert the family.
The child’s family and local villagers initiated a frantic search operation at approximately 3:30 p.m. Despite their efforts to scour the waters, Sharif remained missing for over three hours. A local diver eventually recovered his body at around 6:15 p.m.
Mohammad Imam Hossain, an inspector at the Dharmapasha Police Station, confirmed that officers were dispatched to the scene immediately upon receiving the report of the disappearance. The police later verified that the search concluded with the recovery of the boy’s body.
The tragedy has left the village in mourning. Sharif’s father, Farid Mia, expressed his profound grief, stating that he would never have allowed his sons to go near the water had he foreseen the outcome. The incident serves as a grim reminder of the dangers posed by the powerful currents in the region’s waterbodies during the monsoon season.
