A mother’s desperate attempt to send life-saving medicine to her ailing son in Saudi Arabia ended in tragedy Tuesday evening when she was struck and killed by a speeding microbus in Chandpur’s Matlab Uttar upazila. The victim, 55-year-old Khateja Begum, was walking along the roadside in Ammakanda village when the vehicle struck her from behind, causing fatal injuries.

Local residents and relatives rushed Khateja to the Matlab South Upazila Health Complex, where attending physicians declared her dead on arrival. The microbus driver fled the scene immediately following the collision, and no arrests have been made.

Khateja, a widow from Khidirpur village, had been struggling to maintain her family since her husband, Mannan Mridha, passed away 11 months ago. Hoping to improve their financial situation, she had taken on significant debt to send her only son, Nayeem, to Saudi Arabia for employment just two months ago. Upon learning that her son had fallen ill abroad, Khateja sought to send him medication through one of his colleagues, Sobhan, who was visiting his home in the nearby village of Tatuya before returning to the Middle East.

The tragedy has left her family devastated, compounding the grief of the recent loss of their patriarch. Her son-in-law, Mansur Haji, described the incident as a senseless loss of life that has left the surviving family in a state of extreme vulnerability. He lamented that after enduring the hardship of sending her son abroad to secure their future, Khateja was killed while simply trying to ensure his health.
