Mosque attack in Sreemangal leaves one dead

An elderly man was fatally attacked inside a mosque in Sreemangal, Moulvibazar, on Sunday morning. Hafiz Mia, 80, was killed during Fajr prayers at the Furkania Jame Mosque in the Kumilla Para area of West Loiarkul.

Police have apprehended Jashim Mia, 35, in connection with the assault. Local sources indicate that Mia, who often led prayers in the absence of the regular imam, was attacked with a pen by Jashim Mia as he prepared for morning prayers. Mia succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

Following the incident, residents alerted the Sreemangal police, who subsequently launched an operation and apprehended Jashim Mia. Eyewitnesses reported that the suspect displayed unusual behavior at the time of his arrest. The motive behind the killing remains unclear.

Dr. Faisal Zaman, the residential medical officer at Moulvibazar Sadar Hospital, confirmed that an autopsy had been completed. “The post-mortem examination has concluded, and the body has been handed over to the victim’s family,” he stated. “We believe the death was caused by excessive bleeding, and there were visible signs of injury on his body.”

Sheikh Zahirul Islam, the officer-in-charge of Sreemangal Police Station, confirmed the arrest, stating that the suspect is currently being interrogated. “An investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the murder,” he added. Legal proceedings are ongoing.
