Minister dismisses link between Sylhet official transfer and shrine inquiry

Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Ariful Haque Chowdhury has dismissed concerns regarding the sudden transfer of Sylhet’s outgoing Deputy Commissioner, Sarwar Alam, labeling the move as a standard administrative procedure. Speaking to journalists at Osmani International Airport on Wednesday, the minister clarified that the transfer was coincidental and unrelated to the recent sealing of donation boxes and decks at the Hazrat Shahjalal (RA) shrine.
While addressing the controversy surrounding the shrine, Minister Chowdhury lauded the outgoing official’s efforts to improve transparency. He emphasized that the government intends to build on these initiatives, pledging to establish a management structure for the shrine that ensures accountability and reflects the long-standing expectations of the local public. The minister confirmed that discussions with relevant stakeholders are underway to ensure that all future operations are free from irregularities.

Shifting the focus to international labor relations, the minister announced that positive developments regarding the Malaysian labor market are expected to materialize by next month. Following a successful visit to Malaysia, he noted that official delegations from the Malaysian Ministry of Human Resources and the Ministry of Home Affairs are scheduled to visit Bangladesh by July. These high-level engagements are expected to yield tangible results, clearing the way for increased workforce migration.
Regarding the welfare of expatriates at Osmani International Airport, the minister outlined a series of infrastructure and service improvements. The planned upgrades include enhanced baggage handling, specialized assistance for elderly and ailing passengers, and the installation of a dedicated children’s zone. Furthermore, the government is coordinating with the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism to strengthen security measures and ensure safer transit for passengers arriving on late-night flights.

During his visit, the minister also addressed the tragic deaths of five Sylhet-based expatriate youths in Qatar. He confirmed that the government has prioritized the repatriation of their remains and is working closely to provide comprehensive support to the bereaved families. Following his airport visit, the minister held a meeting with heads of local government departments at the Deputy Commissioner’s office to review administrative operations and regional development goals.
