80 British councilors of Bangladeshi origin were elected in the four boroughs of East London

80 British citizens of Bangladeshi origin have been elected as councilors in the four boroughs (local authorities) Tower Hamlets, Newham, Redbridge and Barking & Dagenham in the British local government elections in East London. According to local political analysts, this is one of the biggest achievements in the political history of the British-Bangladeshi community. More than three hundred people from the Bangladeshi community living in London were candidates in this election.
The election results show that most of the candidates of Bangladeshi origin in all the four boroughs have achieved significant success from independent and regional political platforms outside the mainstream political parties. The biggest success came in Tower Hamlets. Aspire Party nominated councilors won big in this borough. The party secured a record majority by winning 33 seats in the 45-member council. All these 33 people are of Bangladeshi origin. The number of elected councilors of Bangladeshi origin is also the highest here.

Apart from this, three were elected from the Labor Party and one from the Liberal Democratic Party. At the same time, Lutfur Rahman was elected as the Executive Mayor of Tower Hamlets for the fourth time in a row. He got 35 thousand 679 votes and defeated Labor Party candidate Sirajul Islam by a big margin.
On the other hand, Bangladeshi candidates have also achieved great success in Newham. Of the Bangladeshi-origin councilors elected in the borough, 12 won for the Newham Independent Party, 6 for the Labor Party and one for the Green Party. At the same time, Farhad Hossain, a candidate of Bangladeshi origin, was elected the new executive mayor of Newham. He made history as the first Bangladeshi Executive Mayor elected from a major mainstream political party in the UK. Farhad participated in the election for the Labor Party.

A strong presence of the Bangladeshi community has also been seen in Redbridge. Among the elected Bangladeshi councilors, 9 from the Labor Party and 5 from the Independent Law platform won. The influence of Bangladeshi candidates has increased, especially in Ilford-centred Bangladeshi-dominated areas.
On the other hand, among the Bangladeshi councilors elected in Barking and Dagenham, 8 were elected for the Labor Party and 2 for the Green Party.
According to political analysts, the influence of the Bangladeshi community in East London’s local politics has now become stronger. The establishment of Bangladeshi leadership in executive mayoral positions, particularly in Tower Hamlets and Newham, and the widespread presence of Bangladeshi councilors across councils have created new political realities. Apart from that, MP Rushnara Ali and Afsana Begum of two parliamentary seats in Tower Hamlets area are also of Bangladeshi origin.
Apart from East London, some councilors of Bangladeshi origin have been elected in other boroughs of London, Ealing, Croydon, Brent and Birmingham outside London.
Bangladeshis in the UK have been living in East London since the beginning of their immigration era. According to Office for National Statistics data, these four boroughs have a significant Bangladeshi population. The proportion of Bangladeshis in Tower Hamlets is about 35 to 40 percent. There are 40 to 50 thousand people of Bangladeshi origin living in Newham, about 30 thousand in Redbridge and about 20 thousand in Barking and Dagenham.
According to political observers, the new generation of the British-Bangladeshi community is now establishing a strong position not only in the electorate, but also at the center of local policy-making. This election is seen as the biggest proof of that change.
