Four stanzas of epic poet Michael Madhusudan Dutt’s poem ‘Batbriksha’. The banyan tree that commemorates this poem of his has been uprooted. The people on the banks of Sagardandi Kapotaksha river in Jessore’s Keshavpur have expressed regret as the tree was uprooted by the Kalbaisakhi storm on Saturday afternoon.

Today at around 1 o’clock black clouds and severe black storm and rain started. At that time, the big banyan tree on the bank of Kapotaksha river on the east side of Michael Madhusudan Dutta’s house was uprooted by the storm. The mind of the local residents has become heavy as the memorial banyan tree, written in the poet’s quatrain ‘Batbriksha’, has collapsed.
The house of Sunil Halder (70) is next to the banyan tree. He said, there are many memories about the banyan tree. Many people come from all over the country to see it. And maybe no tourist’s footsteps will fall here. This is Michael Madhusudan Dutt’s monumental banyan tree. Today they are burdened with grief because the banyan tree fell.

Director of Madhusudan Academy and Madhusudan-researcher poet Khosru Parvez said that the poet wrote the poem ‘Ban tree’ in 1865 in Versailles, France. This poem is a quatrain poem. He expressed his emotions and memories by writing the poem about the banyan tree of his childhood in the distant city of Versailles. The poem was published in the book ‘Chaturdashpadi Kavitabali’ in 1867.
Khusru Parvez said, “We have been demanding the maintenance of the poet’s memorial banyan tree for a long time. But as no initiative was taken to protect the banyan tree, the last memory of the poet was also wiped out. It is very painful and distressing.’
