Medical board finds rape-accused Shibir leader fit for discharge from Comilla hospital

A four-member medical board at Comilla Medical College Hospital has concluded that central Islami Chhatra Shibir leader Jisan Mia is fit for discharge, raising questions over his prolonged hospital stay while in police custody. Jisan, who faces charges of rape and forced abortion, had remained under guard at the hospital citing medical reasons, which effectively prevented police from presenting him before a court.
The medical board, established Sunday by the hospital’s acting director, conducted a thorough review of Jisan’s clinical reports and performed a physical examination of the patient on Monday. According to sources within the hospital, the board found no evidence of significant health complications, noting that Jisan appeared to be in stable condition.

Dr. Mohammad Zahidur Rahman Majumdar, the board’s member secretary and an associate professor of anesthesiology, confirmed that a formal report has been submitted to the director’s office. While refraining from public comment, hospital insiders indicated that the consensus among the physicians is that the patient is healthy, paving the way for his imminent discharge. Hospital officials stated that final administrative procedures, including the completion of signatures on the medical report, are pending the return of the director, who is currently on leave.
Jisan, 28, the central assistant secretary for international affairs of the Islami Chhatra Shibir and a former district president, was apprehended while receiving treatment at the facility. His arrest followed a case filed by a widow in Daudkandi, who alleged that Jisan repeatedly raped her and forced her to undergo an abortion. While Jisan’s family claimed he was kidnapped and later found unconscious in Laksam, police maintain that he orchestrated the disappearance to avoid marriage.

Police are currently maintaining a heavy presence outside Jisan’s hospital cabin, with officers and intelligence personnel monitoring access. Comilla Superintendent of Police Md. Anisuzzaman stated that authorities are awaiting the formal medical report to proceed. Once the report is received, police intend to present it to the court, which will decide whether Jisan should be remanded to judicial custody.
The legal proceedings against Jisan are ongoing alongside the case against three alleged accomplices—Sekandar Ali, Golam Rabbi, and Sajib Hasan—who were arrested earlier and remanded to jail by a local court on Saturday. If cleared for discharge, Jisan is expected to be transferred directly to police custody on Tuesday.
