Measles Outbreak Death Toll Climbs to 729 in Bangladesh Over 110 Days

Measles and its associated complications have claimed the lives of five more children in Bangladesh, pushing the national death toll to 729 over the past 110 days. According to the latest data released by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Friday, the recent fatalities include 636 children who succumbed to symptoms linked to the disease and 93 others whose deaths were confirmed as measles cases.
The fatalities recorded in the 24-hour period ending Friday morning were geographically dispersed, with two deaths occurring in the Chittagong division, while Dhaka, Rangpur, and Sylhet each reported one death.
Health officials reported 968 suspected cases of measles during the same 24-hour window, with 851 children requiring hospital admission. The Dhaka division accounted for the highest concentration of these new admissions at 301, followed by Chittagong with 181, Barisal with 137, and Sylhet with 87. Meanwhile, 784 patients were discharged from hospitals across the country during this period.
Since the first case was identified on March 15, the outbreak has resulted in 103,961 reported cases, with 87,262 children hospitalized. Official health records indicate that 12,425 of these cases have been confirmed as measles. To date, 83,543 patients have successfully recovered and been discharged from medical facilities.
