A group of lawyers have formed a human chain under the banner of “General Lawyers of Dhaka Lawyers Association” to demand the trial of former interim government’s Chief Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus and Health Advisor Noorjahan Begum, accusing them of negligence in vaccination programs for measles and other diseases due to lack of vaccination.

This human chain took place on the premises of the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court on Wednesday afternoon. About half a hundred lawyers were present in the human chain. Almost all of them are known as pro-Awami League lawyers.

At one stage of the human chain, Zahirul Islam, who is known as a pro-BNP lawyer, asked the lawyers to leave and ended the human chain and they separated. Zahirul was the senior joint secretary of the recently departed committee of the Dhaka Bar Association.

Later, some of the lawyers who gathered there again told Prothom Alo that even after warning from UNICEF, former interim government chief advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus and health advisor Noorjahan Begum, it was decided to change the previous system of buying vaccines and go to open tender system. More than 400 children died due to lack of measles vaccination due to the negligence of the then government, despite UNICEF’s pleas. Legal action should be taken against them.

Kayes Ahmed, a lawyer seeking trial for child death in Meas, said that Nurjahan Begum was appointed as a health advisor despite having no experience in the health sector. They were negligent not only in measles vaccination but also in other vaccinations. They should be tried.

Lawyer Sifat Aminul Karim said, “The government canceled the previous agreement but did not take any alternative measures.” We want justice from the present government. Children have a right to justice. Dr. Yunus and health advisor Noor Jahan cannot avoid this responsibility.

At the end of the human chain, some lawyers tied black cloth over their eyes and face to protest symbolically. At that time, lawyer Farzana Yasmin said, “More than four hundred children have died of measles due to the negligence of the interim government.” We do not see this as mere negligence; It falls under the category of crime. We are appealing for justice for the innocent children.
