Man beaten to death following banana theft dispute in Chittagong

A 45-year-old man was killed in Patiya, Chattogram, following a violent confrontation sparked by allegations of fruit theft late Friday night. The victim, identified as Mohammad Toha, was a local community figure who served as the general secretary of the Patiya Advocate Clerks Association.
According to local reports and police accounts, the incident occurred around midnight in the Monaf Hazir Para neighborhood of the Habilasdwip Union. Toha reportedly confronted a neighbor, Anwar Hossain, regarding bananas stolen from his property earlier that evening. The verbal disagreement quickly escalated into a physical altercation.
Police investigation suggests that Toha was struck with blunt force, including blows from a flashlight and physical assaults, during the dispute. Despite being rushed to Patiya General Hospital by a bystander who witnessed the altercation, Toha was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Sub-Inspector Mohammad Shafiq Ullah of the Patiya Police Station stated that authorities are investigating the exact circumstances of the death, noting that a formal autopsy report will be necessary to confirm the medical cause of the fatality.
Following the altercation, local residents apprehended 29-year-old Anwar Hossain and turned him over to the authorities. Other members of the suspect’s family have since fled the area, according to local sources. The victim’s family maintains that witnesses can confirm the prior theft, and police efforts to locate the remaining individuals involved in the incident are currently ongoing.
