Madaripur Lawmaker Faces Backlash Over Viral Video of Heated Dispute at Arbitration Meeting

A video capturing Madaripur-1 lawmaker Syed Uddin Ahmed Hanjala losing his temper and slamming a table during a community mediation meeting has sparked widespread criticism on social media. The footage, which has circulated widely online, shows the parliamentarian shouting at attendees and demanding silence during a local dispute resolution session held in the Datpara area of Shibchar upazila on May 22.

In the minute-long recording, Hanjala is seen rising from his chair, visibly agitated, as he rebukes those present for interrupting the proceedings. He is heard warning the attendees against offering counterarguments, stating, “I am here to deliver judgment. If anyone is to provide a counter, it will be me.” The altercation appears to have been triggered by a heated disagreement between the lawmaker and former local union BNP convener Taramia.

Taramia alleged that the lawmaker attempted to impose a unilateral decision, refusing to allow stakeholders to present their perspectives. According to Taramia, the role of a mediator is to listen to opposing arguments with patience, arguing that the session devolved into an exclusionary process rather than a transparent public hearing. Local sources confirmed that the situation escalated when the lawmaker lost his composure, prompting an attendee to record the incident on a mobile phone.

The public release of the footage has drawn sharp criticism from online observers, many of whom have questioned the conduct of a public representative in a mediation setting. The incident has fueled a broader discussion regarding the appropriate behavior of elected officials when presiding over local community disputes.

Responding to the controversy, MP Hanjala characterized the event as a matter from over a month ago. He explained that he was specifically requested to intervene in a long-standing impasse that the parties could not resolve on their own. While admitting that he lost his temper and shouted at the participants due to the chaotic nature of the arguments, he maintained that the mediation ultimately concluded successfully and that the resolution was subsequently publicized on his official social media page.
