Low pressure system in Bay of Bengal signals widespread rainfall across Bangladesh

A low-pressure system has formed over the Bay of Bengal, threatening to intensify and bring widespread rainfall to Bangladesh starting this weekend. According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, the system is currently positioned off the coast of Odisha, India, and meteorological experts are monitoring the potential for it to develop into a formal depression.
Forecaster Kazi Zebunnesa stated that while the system’s transition into a depression is not yet certain, such a development would significantly increase the intensity and scope of the precipitation. Scattered rainfall is expected to begin increasing in some regions as early as Saturday evening, with a more pronounced weather shift anticipated across the country by Sunday.
The impact of the system is likely to be felt most acutely in coastal areas, particularly across the Chattogram, Barishal, and Khulna divisions, where heavy downpours are expected. However, meteorologists anticipate that the influence of the low-pressure area will extend to other parts of the country, leading to a period of sustained wet weather. While the most intense rainfall may be confined to a two-day window, unsettled conditions could persist for four to five days.
This development follows an unusually dry June, during which the country recorded approximately 29 percent less rainfall than the seasonal average. Long-term forecasts for July suggest that normal rainfall levels may be reached this month, though meteorologists have cautioned that the formation of multiple low-pressure systems could coincide with intermittent heatwave conditions.
