Law Minister Asaduzzaman Vows Fair Legal Proceedings Against Former Regime Officials Following July Revolution

Minister of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Asaduzzaman stated on Sunday that the interim government will ensure a transparent and fair judicial process for members of the former fascist regime, vowing that the sacrifices made during the July revolution will not be squandered. Speaking as the chief guest at the foundation stone laying ceremony for the new Bar Association building in Barishal, the minister emphasized that justice would be served through legitimate courts rather than through clandestine proceedings.
Asaduzzaman asserted that the administration possesses solid evidence against the perpetrators of past atrocities. He noted that the movement that culminated in the July revolution was built upon 17 years of resistance against authoritarianism, during which thousands were killed, maimed, or subjected to enforced disappearance. The minister emphasized that the government is committed to prosecuting every instance of extrajudicial killing and crimes against humanity, ensuring no pathway remains for the return of fascism.
Reflecting on the political landscape of the previous 17 years, the Law Minister claimed that more than six million opposition activists were targeted with fabricated legal cases, including charges filed against individuals who had been deceased for decades. He stated that under the previous regime, thousands of political activists were killed in extrajudicial actions or disappeared, highlighting the scale of the human rights crisis the current administration seeks to address.
Addressing the current state of governance, Asaduzzaman urged the public to maintain faith in the leadership of Tarique Rahman. He pointed to ongoing social initiatives, such as the distribution of family and farmer cards, as evidence of the government’s commitment to public welfare. He acknowledged the challenges posed by global fuel shortages stemming from Middle Eastern conflicts but assured that the government is actively pursuing solutions to mitigate the impact on the populace.
Minister of Information and Broadcasting Zahir Uddin Swapon, who also spoke at the event, noted that the previous government had effectively dismantled the rule of law. He stated that the current administration is prioritizing the restoration of social stability and democratic norms, which he described as fundamental to the state.
The ceremony was attended by several prominent figures, including members of parliament Mujibur Rahman Sarwar and Zainul Abedin, Barishal City Corporation Administrator Bilkis Akter Jahan Shirin, and District Council Administrator Akon Kuddusur Rahman. The event was presided over by Barishal District Bar Association President Abul Kalam Azad and facilitated by General Secretary Abul Kalam Azad (Emon), with additional remarks provided by local political leaders and legal professionals.
