Lalmonirhat court sentences UP chairman, two others to prison for drug offenses
LALMONIRHAT, Bangladesh – A local Union Council chairman and another individual have each been sentenced to five years of rigorous imprisonment and fined 5,000 Bangladeshi Taka (approximately $60 USD) in separate drug trafficking cases. The ruling was delivered yesterday by the Additional District and Sessions Judge Court in Lalmonirhat.
Humayun Ahmed (Kabir), chairman of the Sarpukur Union Council in Aditmari Upazila, and Sekendar Ali, a resident of the same union’s Sorol Kha village, were present in court when the verdict was announced.
The case against the two men stems from a 2012 incident. According to court proceedings, Humayun Ahmed was traveling from Lalmonirhat city to Dhaka in a pickup truck laden with corn. Acting on a tip, police intercepted and searched the vehicle at the Old Bus Stand area. During the search, authorities discovered 344 bottles of Phensedyl, a cough syrup often misused as a recreational drug, concealed in a special compartment within the truck. Both Ahmed and his associate, Sekendar Ali, were apprehended at the scene.
A case was subsequently filed by the police under the Narcotics Control Act. Following the examination of evidence and testimonies, the court delivered its judgment yesterday. The convicted individuals were later taken to Lalmonirhat District Jail.
