Khulna man confesses to triple homicide of mother-in-law and two stepsons

A 38-year-old truck driver has confessed to the brutal triple murder of his mother-in-law and two stepsons in the Sonadanga area of Khulna. Rafiqul Islam provided a formal statement under section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure on Saturday after being presented before a judicial magistrate, admitting he strangled all three victims with fabrics.
The investigation, led by Sonadanga Police Station Inspector Animesh Mondal, has reached its final stages. According to police, the killings were fueled by long-standing domestic resentment following the victim’s disapproval of the suspect’s marriage to her daughter.

The suspect told investigators that the conflict escalated on the night of Eid when the mother-in-law, 55-year-old Baby Begum, engaged in a heated argument with him and ordered him to leave the residence. The following morning, Rafiqul returned to the home and, after an altercation with Baby Begum, pushed her to the floor and strangled her with her own scarf.
When the eldest grandson, 13-year-old Shamim, witnessed the assault, the suspect turned on him, strangling the boy to ensure his silence. The chaos awakened the youngest child, four-year-old Mustakim. Upon realizing the boy had seen the crime, Rafiqul strangled him as well using a pajama found on a trunk.

Following the killings, Rafiqul concealed the bodies throughout the home: Baby Begum’s body was pushed under a bed, Shamim’s was left on top of a trunk, and Mustakim’s was placed inside a wardrobe drawer. He then locked the room and the main entrance to the house. When his wife, Fatema Begum, eventually awoke and found the house locked, Rafiqul reportedly lied, claiming her mother had left the premises. He remained in the house until the afternoon, leaving only after the smell of decomposition began to alert others to the room.
Rafiqul fled to Barishal following the discovery of the bodies on May 30, but was apprehended by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) on Thursday night in the city’s Kashipur area. He was subsequently transferred to Sonadanga police custody.
The investigation confirms that no other individuals were involved in the crime. Following his confession on Saturday, Rafiqul was remanded to judicial custody. The case originated from a complaint filed by Masum Bepari, the father of the two murdered children, who had long been embroiled in family disputes regarding the suspect’s relationship with his former wife.
