Netrokona Hospital Vandalized Following Allegations of Medical Negligence in Patient Death

A surge of violence erupted at the Netrokona District Hospital late Sunday night as family members and local residents vandalized the emergency department, alleging medical negligence in the death of a 23-year-old battery-run rickshaw driver.
The deceased, Sajib Mia, a resident of the city’s Amgachtala area, had been admitted to the emergency ward earlier that evening suffering from severe abdominal pain and vomiting. His relatives claimed that the duty doctor, Sujan Pal, delayed necessary treatment by citing a lack of electricity, leading to the patient’s deterioration and eventual death. Attempts to contact Dr. Pal for comment were unsuccessful, as his mobile phone remained switched off.

Witnesses reported that news of the death triggered an immediate backlash from the crowd gathered at the hospital. Enraged, the group damaged several windowpanes and a door within the emergency ward and the diarrhea unit. Local police arrived shortly thereafter to restore order, and the situation was eventually calmed with the assistance of community members.
Hospital officials presented a conflicting account of the events. According to Residential Medical Officer Mazharul Amin, the facility had been relying on generator power since Sunday evening due to a local outage. Amin stated that when Mia arrived at 8:08 p.m., medical staff performed an immediate electrocardiogram, which indicated the patient was in cardiac arrest. Preparations were reportedly underway to refer the patient to a medical college hospital for advanced care when he succumbed to his condition.

Hospital Superintendent Ekramul Hasan confirmed that an investigation into the allegations of negligence has been launched, promising appropriate action if any lapse in protocol is identified. Netrokona Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abul Khayer confirmed that the situation remains under control and stated that authorities are prepared to take legal action once a formal, written complaint is filed.
