Khair spent 22 years chained to the waist, waiting for treatment

The little tin house is very dilapidated. Abul Khair, a mentally unstable youth from Sonapur village of Muradnagar upazila of Comilla, has been living in chains for 22 years in its dark corner. Relatives and neighbors said that his life is going on in an uncertain direction due to lack of treatment.
According to local sources, Abul Khair was married into the family at the age of 18. After three years of marriage, his behavior became abnormal. With time he lost his mental balance. At one point he got excited and started beating and disturbing the people around him. Forced to handle the situation in such a situation, father Noor Mia chained him. Since then his chained life began.

According to relatives, Abul Khair’s life became more miserable after the death of his parents. He was virtually parentless after his parents died about 15 years ago. His wife left him as he had no children. Abdur Rahman, a CNG auto rickshaw driver by profession, is currently taking care of him in the absence of his siblings. The small tin house on the half percent land left by father is now Khair’s whole world.
Abdur Rahman said, Khair was taken to Pabna mental hospital with the help of the village people five years ago. But the hospital authorities did not admit him due to the complexity of the required documents. Due to lack of money, I could not arrange treatment later.

Abdur Rahman said that Khair could not even stand up straight because he had been chained around his waist for a long time, “I believe, if he gets proper treatment and rehabilitation, he may be able to return to a normal life.” But I am a low income person. I am struggling to run my own family. I can’t do anything for my brother. We also suffer a lot for him.
Arif Hossain, a local resident, said that if the relevant government department and the rich people of the society had come forward, Abul Khair might have dreamed of a new life. If not treated quickly, he will go into permanent paralysis.
Another resident Mosharraf Hossain said that humanitarian assistance and government initiatives are now very important to restore the right of a person like Abul Khair to a normal life. If he takes a quick step, maybe he will be able to break the chain of 22 years and return to a normal life.
When asked about this, Muradnagar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) ABM Saroar told Rabbi Prothom Alo, “Recently the matter has come to my attention. It is very sad for a man to live like this. The upazila social service officer has been sent to that house. He saw the situation. Soon arrangements will be made to send Abul Khair to a mental health hospital for treatment. Besides, efforts will be made to stay by his side through social service office.
