Journalist assaulted and thrown into river while investigating illegal sand mining in Feni

A reporter for the private television station Mohona TV was hospitalized after being brutally beaten and thrown into a river by a group of assailants while investigating illegal sand extraction in the Chhagalnaiya upazila of Feni. The journalist, M. Nizam Uddin Majumdar, sustained severe injuries to his head, face, eyes, and legs during the assault on Thursday evening in the Jagannath Sonapur area along the banks of the Feni River.
According to the victim’s account, he was documenting the unauthorized sand quarrying when several helmeted individuals ambushed him. The attackers physically assaulted him, threatened him with firearms, and forced him into the river. Majumdar managed to swim to safety before being rescued by locals and transported to the Chhagalnaiya Upazila Health Complex for emergency medical treatment.

In response to the attack, Majumdar filed an attempted murder case with the Chhagalnaiya police station, naming two primary suspects and citing five to six unidentified accomplices. Following the filing of the complaint, local police launched an operation on Friday and successfully apprehended two suspects, including an individual identified as Yusuf Hossain. Chhagalnaiya Police Officer-in-Charge Abu Taher confirmed that investigations are ongoing and that efforts are underway to track down the remaining participants in the attack.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage among the local press corps. On Saturday, journalists in Feni held a protest rally and human chain in front of the local press club to condemn the violence. Speakers at the rally characterized the attack as a direct assault on the freedom of the press and demanded the immediate identification and prosecution of both the perpetrators and the masterminds behind the illegal sand mining operation.

Law enforcement officials have pledged to handle the case with the utmost urgency. Md. Imtiaz Ahmed, the Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police for the Chhagalnaiya Circle, stated that the department is prioritizing the investigation and remains committed to bringing all those responsible for the violence to justice.
