Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal leader dies after factional clash in Narsingdi

A prominent Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) leader has died from gunshot wounds sustained during a factional clash within the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in the Palash Upazila of Narsingdi. Ibrahim Masum, 36, passed away at a private hospital in Dhaka on Monday morning after battling his injuries for nine days.

Masum, the immediate former vice president of the Danga Union unit of the JCD, had been a candidate for the presidency of the local committee. He sustained critical injuries during an armed confrontation on the night of August 1. Following the attack, his brother-in-law, Md. Mohsin, filed a case at the Palash Police Station on August 4.

Local police and residents reported that the violence stemmed from long-standing tensions regarding regional dominance and control over the local sand trade. The conflict involved two opposing groups: one led by Union Swechasebak Dal President Mamun Ahmed, Secretary Joynal Abedin, and Masum; and another led by former Danga Union BNP Secretary Roman Mia.

The animosity intensified on the afternoon of August 1, following an alleged altercation at a local market between Masum and an associate of Roman Mia named Shah Alam. This incident triggered retaliatory protests and rival demonstrations by both groups throughout the area.

According to the case file, the fatal escalation occurred around 1:30 a.m. on August 2, when Roman Mia’s faction allegedly ambushed Masum, Mamun Ahmed, and Joynal Abedin with firearms and indigenous weapons near a grocery store in Fakirbari. Masum was shot in the abdomen, while at least ten others suffered injuries during the assault.

Masum was initially rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he underwent surgery to remove a bullet. Despite emergency care, his condition deteriorated on Sunday night. He was moved to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where he was pronounced dead at 9:00 a.m. on Monday.

Palash Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shahed Al Mamun confirmed that the victim’s body has been sent to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy. Authorities stated that the previously filed assault case will now be upgraded to a murder case. The initial complaint had named 37 suspects, with an additional 10 to 15 unidentified individuals listed as accomplices.
