International Crimes Tribunal Orders Arrest of Four Officials in Ekramul Haq Killing Case

The International Crimes Tribunal-2 on Tuesday ordered the formal arrest of four individuals, including a former member of parliament and three military officers, in connection with the 2018 extrajudicial killing of Teknaf municipal councillor Ekramul Haque.
The four individuals identified by the tribunal are former MP Abdur Rahman Bodi, Brigadier General Miftah Uddin Ahmed, Brigadier General Md Mahbub Alam, and former Colonel Md Anwar Latif Khan. Bodi previously represented the Cox’s Bazar-4 constituency, while the three officers are former senior officials of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB). Mahbub Alam served as a RAB director, Miftah Uddin as a RAB commander, and Anwar Latif Khan as an additional director general of the force.
Currently, Mahbub Alam and Anwar Latif Khan are being held at a sub-jail in Dhaka Cantonment in relation to a separate case involving crimes against humanity. Miftah Uddin is currently in military custody, while Bodi remains incarcerated following a previous arrest. All four were produced before the tribunal on Tuesday, where the court granted the prosecution’s motion to include them as formal defendants in the Ekramul Haque murder case. The tribunal has set September 7 as the date for the next hearing.
The case involves a total of 11 accused, including several high-ranking figures from the previous administration. These include ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan, former Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, former Inspector General of Police Benazir Ahmed, and former RAB company commanders Ruhul Amin and Md Ashekur Rahman, along with former Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) officer Nazmus Sakib Mahmud.
Regarding the seven remaining suspects, the tribunal was informed that authorities have yet to apprehend them. Consequently, the court ordered the publication of legal notices in two newspapers, mandating their surrender to the tribunal.
Ekramul Haque, who served as the president of the Teknaf Upazila unit of the Jubo League for 12 years, was killed on the night of May 26, 2018. Official accounts at the time characterized his death as the result of a “gunfight” involving RAB personnel, a claim that remains the central focus of the ongoing legal proceedings.
