RAB arrests online gambling ring leader in Dhaka for illicit financial gains

The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested a 43-year-old man, identified as Ohidur Rahman, on charges of operating as an administrator and super-agent for international online gambling platforms. Elite force members apprehended the suspect in the Shahjahanpur area of the capital on Tuesday afternoon.
RAB officials released a statement on Wednesday confirming the arrest. According to investigators, Rahman allegedly used social media platforms, including Facebook and WhatsApp, to lure users into participating in prohibited online gambling activities. Authorities claim he successfully swindled victims out of millions of taka, using the illicit proceeds to acquire land and vehicles.
During the arrest, RAB confiscated two smartphones, two SIM cards, a motorcycle, and over 236,000 taka in cash. Of the seized funds, 131,000 taka was recovered from various mobile financial service accounts, while 105,000 taka was found in physical currency.
During initial questioning, Rahman admitted to promoting and facilitating access to banned international gambling websites. Forensic analysis of his mobile devices revealed extensive records of communication with domestic and international associates, confirming his role as a key coordinator in the illicit gambling network.
Intelligence reports suggest that Rahman’s operation involved a network of approximately 10 to 12 additional associates. The syndicate allegedly utilized electronic devices to manage gambling activities through a tiered system of agents. Customers were required to purchase virtual currency for the gambling sites via mobile financial services, which the agents then funneled into the group’s offshore operations.
RAB stated that legal proceedings against Rahman are currently underway. Furthermore, the agency has launched an operation to identify and apprehend the remaining members of the syndicate based on evidence and testimonies obtained from the suspect.
