In Meherpur, miscreants shot BNP workers, exploded bombs and escaped

Miscreants hurled bullets and bombs at a BNP worker in Meherpur’s Gangni. The attack took place on the Saharbati-Bhatpara road of the upazila on Monday morning. He was sent to Kushtia Medical College Hospital in critical condition.
BNP worker’s name is Mukul Hossain (55). He is the son of Nek Mohammad of Saharbati village. According to local sources, he is actively associated with BNP politics in the area.
Police and local people said that Mukul Hossain was walking from Saharbati village on the road of Bhatpara village early this morning. A group of miscreants fired several shots at him at Bhatpara junction. He was shot in the chest, back and hand. He fell to the ground. The miscreants detonated a few bombs and quickly left the scene. Hearing the sound of gunshots, people from the neighborhood came and rescued Mukul in a bloody state and first took him to Gangni Upazila Health Complex. Later he was shifted to Kushtia Medical College Hospital for better treatment.
Doctor Omar Farooq of Gangni Upazila Health Complex said that Mukul Hossain’s body has multiple bullet marks. His condition is critical. He was sent to Kushtia Medical College Hospital for better treatment.
Two BNP leaders of Saharbati village told Prothom Alo that although Mukul Hossain does not hold any position in BNP, he is known as a follower of former upazila BNP president Asaduzzaman Bablu in the area. He campaigned for former member of parliament Amjad Hossain in the last parliamentary elections. This attack may have been due to dominance in the area or prior enmity.
Uttam Kumar Das, Officer-in-Charge of Gangni Police Station, said that the police visited the spot after receiving the information. Various evidences including bullet casings have been collected from there. Efforts are on to identify and arrest the people involved in the incident. Additional police have been deployed in the area.
