Imprisoned barrister Suman wants to contest Bar Council elections, writ seeks directions

Imprisoned lawyer Syed Sayedul Haque (known as Barrister Sumon) wants to participate in the elections to be held on May 19 of the Bangladesh Bar Council. For this, an application was made on April 12 to the Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka to take necessary steps for his signature on the nomination form.

A writ has been filed challenging the inaction in disposing of this application. Supreme Court lawyer Liton Ahmed filed the writ in the relevant branch of the High Court as the petitioner on Wednesday. On April 12, lawyer Liton Ahmed submitted the application to the Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka on behalf of Barrister Sumon.

In the writ application, a ruling has been sought as to why the inaction of the defendant (Dhaka Deputy Commissioner) in resolving the application made on April 12 to take the necessary steps for the signature of Syed Sayedul Haque Sumon detained on the nomination paper should not be declared outside the legal authority.

If the ruling is pending, instructions have been sought to the District Commissioner to take necessary steps to sign the nomination papers of detained Syed Syedul Haque Sumon. The writ has also sought directions to the Bar Council to accept the nomination papers of Syed Sayedul Haque Sumon. Law Secretary, Secretary of Bangladesh Bar Council and Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka have been made defendants in the writ.

Lawyer Liton Ahmed told Prothom Alo on Wednesday that Suman wants to participate in the Bar Council elections. This election will be held on May 19. The deadline for filing nomination papers for the election ends on April 16. Suman’s signature is required on the election nomination form to be a candidate. An application was submitted to the Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka on April 12 requesting to take necessary steps for this. In view of this the writ is filed challenging the inaction in disposing of the application without any visible remedy. The writ will be taken up in court tomorrow for hearing.

After the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government on August 5, 2024 in a student-mass coup, more than 70 people including several former ministers, members of parliament, government bureaucrats, police, journalists were arrested. Syed Syedul Haque was arrested on October 22 of the same year. He is former Member of Parliament of Habiganj-4 (Chunarughat-Madhavpur) Constituency. He contested as an independent candidate in the 12th National Parliament election and won. Related sources said that there are seven cases against him.
