Raveena Tandon reflects on early career struggles and industry labels

Bollywood actress Raveena Tandon has opened up about the grueling early years of her career, reflecting on a period when persistent professional setbacks led the media to label her as a source of bad luck. Making her debut in 1991 alongside Salman Khan in *Patthar Ke Phool*, Tandon faced a string of box-office disappointments that invited harsh scrutiny from industry critics. During this period, the press frequently referred to her as “Little Miss Jinx,” a derogatory moniker suggesting that her involvement in a project signaled impending failure.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, Tandon recalled the cruelty of the media landscape in the 1990s, noting that she often became a scapegoat for films that underperformed. Despite the intense pressure, the actress maintained a pragmatic approach, emphasizing that the success or failure of a cinematic project is rarely the burden of a single individual. She noted that while she consistently gave her best efforts, the industry’s fickle nature meant that results were often unpredictable and beyond her control.
The turning point for Tandon arrived in 1994 with the release of the action thriller *Mohra*. The film’s success marked a dramatic shift in her public and professional perception. Tandon recounted how producer Gulshan Rai publicly reversed the industry’s narrative by labeling her a “lucky charm,” which prompted an immediate surge in interest from filmmakers who had previously avoided her. This endorsement effectively silenced critics and solidified her standing as one of the decade’s leading stars.
Tandon further transformed her screen presence with the 1999 film *Shool*, a project that allowed her to shed the hyper-glamorous image that had defined her early career and showcase her versatility as a serious actress. By moving beyond the conventional expectations of the era, she established a reputation for artistic depth that continued to evolve over the following decades.
Currently, Tandon continues her professional journey with the upcoming film *Welcome to the Jungle*. The project marks a notable reunion for the actress, as she is set to share the screen with Akshay Kumar for the first time in 22 years.
