HSC candidates block major Chittagong thoroughfares demanding education minister resignation

HSC examinees in Chattogram escalated their protests on Wednesday, blockading a major city thoroughfare to demand the resignation of Education Minister A.N.M. Ehsanul Hoque Milan. The demonstrators occupied the city’s busy No. 2 Gate area around 4:30 p.m., bringing traffic to a standstill across the vital CDA Avenue and Bayazid Bostami Road.
The students initiated their protest at 2:30 p.m. after claiming their grievances remain unaddressed. According to the participants, the protest evolved from a six-point demand to a singular ultimatum for the minister’s resignation following reports of alleged attacks on students during demonstrations in Dhaka. The students have vowed to intensify their agitation if their conditions are not met immediately.

The blockade caused significant gridlock throughout the city, with students occupying the center of the intersection to chant slogans and demand administrative accountability. This marks the second consecutive day of major disruptions in Chattogram; on Tuesday, examinees blocked roads for nearly four and a half hours, during which they dismantled a gate at the Chattogram Education Board office.
The students’ initial six-point demand, presented in a formal memorandum to the board chairman, includes calls for higher quality question papers, accountability for those responsible for errors in examination materials, and fair grading practices. Furthermore, the students are advocating for special provisions for those unable to attend exams due to natural disasters and are demanding the publication of a revised examination schedule.

Officials from the Chattogram Education Board confirmed that the students’ demands have been formally forwarded to the Ministry of Education for review. As of late Wednesday afternoon, the protest remained ongoing, causing widespread commuter disruption across the city.
