Habiganj court grants bail to 11 student leaders in NCP convoy attack case

A Habiganj judicial magistrate court granted bail on Sunday to 11 members of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), including the organization’s district president, Shah Rajib Ahmed, in connection with an attack on a National Citizens Party (NCP) motorcade. The legal proceedings stem from a July 28 incident in front of the Habiganj Town Hall, where NCP central leaders, including Nasiruddin Patwari and Sarjis Alam, were targeted by stone-throwing and vehicle vandalism following a public rally.

The bail hearing followed a case filed on July 29 by Tanmay Taher, convener of the district unit of Chatra Shakti. That complaint named Ahmed and 10 others, along with approximately 100 unidentified individuals, accusing them of attempted murder, assault, and property damage. According to defense attorney Kutub Uddin, the court decided to grant bail after identifying significant inconsistencies in the timing and descriptions of the incident provided in the initial case filing.

The violence has triggered reciprocal legal action between the two groups. Following the incident, Iqbal Hossain Rukan, joint general secretary of the district Chhatra Dal, filed a separate case last Thursday against 50 members of the NCP, including central coordinator Nasiruddin Patwari and northern regional organizer Sarjis Alam.

This counter-suit alleges attempted murder, vandalism, and theft, claiming that NCP members initiated the violence near the Court Mosque area on July 28. According to the case documents, the NCP group allegedly utilized lethal weapons to assault Chhatra Dal activists during the clashes. Both investigations remain ongoing as judicial scrutiny continues into the contradictory reports of the day’s events.
