Gana Odhikar Parishad Leaders Allege Violent Attack by Jamaat-e-Islami Activists in Kushtia

KUSHTIA — Leaders of the Gono Odhikar Parishad have alleged that members of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing, Islami Chhatra Shibir, launched a violent attack on their activists in Kushtia, leaving several people seriously injured. The accusations were made during a press conference held at the Kushtia Press Club on Sunday night.
Toukir Ahmed, organizational secretary of the Gono Odhikar Parishad’s Kushtia district unit, stated that the incident occurred on Saturday afternoon during a pre-scheduled peaceful rally at the Choy Rastar Mor intersection in Kushtia city. According to Ahmed, as the rally was concluding, local Member of Parliament Amir Hamza arrived at the scene with a group of Jamaat-Shibir activists and launched a surprise assault on the protesters.
Ahmed reported that the violence resulted in severe injuries, including one worker whose tendons were severed during the attack. Another party leader suffered a broken nasal bone and a fractured forehead. Numerous other activists were reportedly injured in the melee. Furthermore, Ahmed accused the assailants of targeting the business establishment of Abdul Khalek, the district general secretary of the Gono Odhikar Parishad, where they allegedly destroyed inventory, cash, and electronic equipment.
Addressing the presence of MP Amir Hamza at the rally site, Ahmed questioned the legislator’s motives, noting that he could have taken an alternate route to his home instead of stopping his vehicle at the gathering. Ahmed challenged claims made by the lawmaker that the Gono Odhikar Parishad workers had instigated the violence by throwing bricks, offering to resign from politics if such actions could be substantiated by video or photographic evidence.
The party leaders confirmed that some of the injured are currently receiving medical treatment in Dhaka. A formal complaint has been filed with the local police station regarding the incident.
The press conference was attended by several senior members of the organization, including Khulna Divisional Chief Coordinator Shakil Ahmed, Acting District President Rashedul Islam, and various leaders from the student wing and local administrative units. As of Sunday night, the accused parties had not provided a formal response to these allegations.
