Gana Odhikar Parishad leader Mamunur Rashid has been arrested by the police in connection with the beating of Ranishankoil Upazila Project Implementation Officer (PIO) of Thakurgaon. He was arrested from Suihari Driverpara area of ​​Dinajpur city last Friday night.

Mamunur Rashid was elected from Gana Odhikar Parishad in Thakurgaon-3 (Ranishankail, Pirganj Upazila) constituency in the last parliamentary elections. He lost his bail. Mamunur was the Vice-President of the Central Committee of Chhatra Odhikar Parishad, an affiliate of Gana Odhikar Parishad.

Mamunur had covered up since the PIO beating incident. Yesterday night, Mamunur Rashid was arrested from Dinajpur city with the help of Dinajpur Kotwali police station.

According to the police, PIO Noornavi Sarkar was staying at his office in Ranishankoil Upazila Parishad Bhawan after 9 pm on April 7. At that time, Mamunur Rashid went there with people. They had an argument with the PIO about opening the office at night. At one stage, Mamunur Rashid and his accomplices beat up the PIO. On hearing the news, local Chhatra Dal leaders and activists came and took a stand in favor of PIO. At that time, there was a fight between Chhatra Dal leaders and workers, Mamunur Rashid and his associates.

After the incident, PIO Nurunnabi Sarkar filed a case in Ranishankoil police station naming five people including Mamunur Rashid as the plaintiff. Ziaur Rahman, organizing secretary of Ranishankoil Upazila Press Club and member Rakib Ferdous are among the accused. Immediately after the case, the police arrested Ziaur Rahman from Bhandara area of ​​Ranishankoil town.

PIO Noornabi Sarkar complained, “Mamunur Rashid used to demand money from me at various times. He was angry with me for not agreeing. That night, when I was busy with office work, Mamunur Rashid came to the office with his people and attacked me and beat me up. The attackers ransacked the office documents. Since this incident, I have been suffering from insecurity.

Confirming the arrest of Mamunur Rashid, Deputy Inspector of Ranishankoil police station and investigation officer of the case Rahmat Ullah (Roni) said that a case has been registered in the case of PIO entering the office of the Upazila Parishad building and beating the PIO. After that case, the main accused, Mamunur Rashid, committed suicide. He was arrested from Dinajpur yesterday. Preparations are underway to take him to court.
