Four Men Confess to Gang Rape and Murder of Woman in Munshiganj

Four men have confessed to the gang rape and murder of a 19-year-old woman in Munshiganj, revealing a calculated plot to erase personal debts and conceal a clandestine relationship. The suspects—identified as Abu Kalam, 48, Jamal Hossain, 44, Russell Mia, 44, and Alamin Pradhan, 50—were apprehended by the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) following the discovery of the victim’s body in the Fuldi River last Friday.

The victim’s body was initially recovered by the river police in the Boro Bhaterchar area of Gazaria upazila. Due to decomposition, investigators were initially unable to identify the deceased. However, the PBI’s crime scene unit utilized digital forensics to confirm her identity, prompting her sister to file a formal murder case at the Gazaria police station. The PBI assumed control of the investigation on May 30.

According to a press release issued by the PBI on Sunday, the suspects admitted that the motive for the killing was twofold: to avoid paying outstanding debts and to protect their social standing. The victim was reportedly owed 25,000 taka by Kalam and 10,000 taka by Mia. Furthermore, the victim had maintained a personal relationship with Hossain, which the group feared would be exposed after a relative allegedly witnessed their interactions.

The PBI stated that the four men, all residents of Boro Bhaterchar, began orchestrating the crime roughly 15 days prior to the murder, meeting near Hamdard University Bangladesh to finalize the plan. On the evening of May 26, the group lured the young woman to the banks of the Fuldi River under false pretenses. They transported her by boat to an isolated cornfield on the opposite bank, where she was gang-raped and subsequently strangled using her own clothing.

To dispose of the evidence, the perpetrators discarded the victim’s body into the river. PBI Additional Superintendent of Police Asma Ara Jahan confirmed that the case has been solved through a combination of digital evidence, eyewitness testimony, and the suspects’ judicial confessions. While the primary perpetrators are now in custody, the PBI indicated that the investigation remains ongoing.
