Former Lawmaker Nur Mohammad Remanded for Three Days on Anti-Terrorism Charges

A Dhaka court granted a three-day remand on Sunday for former Member of Parliament for Jamalpur-1, Md. Nur Mohammad, following his arrest under the Anti-Terrorism Act. Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam issued the order after police requested a seven-day interrogation period to investigate his alleged involvement in anti-state activities.
Mohammad was apprehended by the Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police on Saturday night in the capital’s Gulshan area. According to case documents, the charges stem from an incident on the morning of June 18, when the former lawmaker allegedly led a procession of members from a banned organization near the Mohakhali bus terminal in the Tejgaon industrial area.

Prosecutors allege that the participants, armed with sticks and provocative banners, engaged in anti-state sloganeering and detonated crude bombs to incite public panic. Law enforcement officials reported seizing unexploded bombs, banners, and mobile phones from the scene.
During the court hearing, the investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Mohammad Sohel Sarkar, argued that initial findings link Mohammad to the incident. Authorities stated that his custodial interrogation is essential to identify and apprehend other suspects who remain at large.

In addition to the charges filed at Tejgaon Police Station, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police confirmed in a press statement that Mohammad is also a named defendant in an explosive substances case previously filed in Jamalpur district.
