Former Education Minister Dipu Moni Granted 12-Hour Parole to Attend Husbands Funeral

Former Education Minister and joint general secretary of the now-prohibited Awami League, Dipu Moni, has been granted a 12-hour parole to attend her husband’s funeral. Munshiganj District Magistrate and Deputy Commissioner Syeda Nurmahal Ashrafi approved the release, which is scheduled for Thursday from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Dipu Moni’s legal counsel, Gazi Faisal Islam, confirmed the decision on Wednesday. While the defense team had initially petitioned for a four-day parole, the district administration limited the duration to 12 hours. Dipu Moni, who has been held in Munshiganj District Jail in connection with several murder cases linked to the July mass uprising, had previously filed multiple unsuccessful requests to visit her ailing husband while in custody.
The former minister’s husband, Tawfiq Nawaz, passed away on Tuesday at 10:27 p.m. at Continental Hospital in Dhaka’s Gulshan area. He had been suffering from prolonged complications involving his liver and kidneys, and his health had deteriorated significantly in the days leading up to his death.
On Wednesday morning, Dipu Moni’s daughter, Tani Deepabali, and attorney Gazi Faisal Islam visited the Munshiganj prison to meet with her before proceeding to the Deputy Commissioner’s office to secure the parole request.
Under police escort, Dipu Moni will be released from jail at 6:00 a.m. on Thursday. According to family members, the body of Tawfiq Nawaz will be taken to their residence in Kalabagan, Dhaka, where the couple will have a final meeting. Subsequently, the remains will be moved to the Azad Mosque in Gulshan for funeral prayers. The burial is scheduled to take place at the Banani Graveyard following the afternoon prayers.
Regarding the legal basis for the parole, attorney Faisal Islam noted that current prison regulations allow for a 12-hour release during daylight hours at the discretion of the district magistrate. He stated that the legal team secured the release in full compliance with these existing provisions.
