Former Bangladesh Police Chief Benazir Ahmed Arrested in Dubai Ahead of Extradition

Former Inspector General of Police Benazir Ahmed has been arrested in Dubai following an international manhunt, and the Bangladeshi government is now accelerating efforts to extradite him to face prosecution on multiple charges of corruption and forgery. The arrest, which took place on June 12, was facilitated by Interpol after the Ministry of Home Affairs requested a red notice to track the former police chief.
According to Akhatarul Islam, deputy director of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), Benazir Ahmed is currently facing six distinct criminal cases. Legal proceedings are already underway regarding the acquisition of 146.2 million taka in assets disproportionate to his known sources of income, while investigations continue into five other cases involving an additional 760 million taka in alleged illicit wealth.

Authorities confirmed that the former top official, who served as Inspector General from April 2020 to September 2022, also faces charges of passport forgery. Investigators allege that while serving as a government official, he fraudulently obtained multiple private passports in violation of state regulations. The probe into his financial activities, which commenced last year, led to the freezing of his bank accounts and the court-ordered seizure of extensive assets. These include numerous apartments in Dhaka, hundreds of bighas of land across several districts, and various corporate shares and savings certificates registered to him and his family members.
The Ministry of Home Affairs is coordinating the diplomatic and legal procedures necessary to return the former police official to Dhaka. Government officials have expressed confidence that the transition will be completed shortly, allowing the judicial process to proceed for a man who once held the most senior positions in the country’s law enforcement, including the roles of Director General of the Rapid Action Battalion and Commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
